I came across these recently – several badly damaged slides containing images of my early artwork, c1977. I had the film digitized to save them.
Interiors of my Cambridge apartment, I hadn’t thought of these paintings for quite a while and was glad to see them again. I have good memories of that time in my life – fun painting years. Many of the pals I knew then, just out on our own after art school, are still painting now. That was my intention too, but for me the creative road turned into a winding one, with multiple stops along the way. I allowed fate to take its course.
My interests have moved me from painting to quilting, designing clothes, stitching journals, binding books, building keepsake boxes, collaging photos, and knitting. I stayed with each of these for a while, sometimes in combination, as new ideas gradually came into view – one project leading me to the next. My knitting is at the forefront now, and probably will be for the long run, so it’s unlikely I’ll ever use most of the tools and supplies related to these past projects, that I still have on-hand, but that’s okay. Their value to me by now is sentimental. Since our move, they’re stowed away neatly in covered bins, and stacked in the corner of my storage closet.
It’ll be a smorgasbord one day for my young crafters, who might mine their contents for fun, and gems of inspiration – finding their creative voice from the start or along a winding road like me.
I remember my excitement when aunt Hattie passed her knitting needles my way. Recognizing my teenaged interest and with her own knitting days behind her, she was undoubtedly glad to find a home for her cherished tools. When I knit with them now, I think of her.
One day I’ll pass them to Violet and tell her about Hattie, pointing out her place in our family tree. Hattie was actually my grandmother’s aunt. I just shorten it as I speak of her, easier than my great, great...
Imagine knitting needles all the way from great, great, great, great aunt Hattie’s craft bin to her Violet. With lifetimes in between, I know she’d be pleased.
Mining Diamonds, my next knit design, coming soon.
